As someone who has chosen a non-conventional life as a muralist and surfer, being the only woman in the room (or in the lineup) has been a common experience throughout my life.
I’ve painted murals around the world, often working alone on construction sites, in hotels, or on commercial projects where I was the only woman present. I’ve also spent years surfing in lineups where I was frequently the only female surfer in the water.
What I’ve learned is that effectiveness doesn’t come from trying to “fit in”. It comes from knowing who you are and showing up consistently as the most authentic version of yourself. Early on, I felt pressure to prove myself. Over time, I realized that my work speaks for itself. Confidence came from consistency, lived experience, and trusting myself rather than seeking validation from others.
I don’t see being different as a disadvantage, and I encourage everyone to lean into what makes them unique, especially as creatives. Some of my greatest opportunities have come precisely because I brought a perspective that wasn’t already represented.
Be yourself, Be unique. Be creative!
